Vanes-Martirosyan
Vanes "The Nightmare" Martirosyan born in Abovyan, Armenia is a US-American boxer of Armenian descent.
Amateur
His family moved to Glendale which has a big Armenian community when he was four years old. He started boxing when he was seven after his father, also an amateur boxer found out there was a gym nearby. Martirosyan was taken out of junior high school by his father and became home-schooled when it was obvious that he needed to keep his son’s fighting confined to the ring.
Andre Berto and Juan McPherson were the top welters in 2004 but Berto was DQd after pushing McPherson down in their fight and McPherson injured himself leaving a spot open. He fought Berto in the North American qualification when Berto competed for Haiti and beat him thus qualifying for the US Olympic team (Berto could compete for Haiti in spite of that loss).
In Athens he defeated an Algerian but ran into two-time world champ Lorenzo Aragon Armenteros from Cuba and was eliminated.
He finished 120 wins, and 10 losses. All losses except to Aragon have been avenged in rematches.
